What HonestTag will not do
By the HonestTag team ยท Published October 12, 2026
This page lists four things HonestTag has chosen not to build, and what you get instead. HonestTag reads your Shopify orders, matches each order to the first ad click it recorded, and classifies the buyer as new or returning. On paid plans it keeps proof for each attributed order and sends verified purchases to the destinations you connect, within your plan's limit on how many it sends to at once. It will not be a data-layer editor, an AI analyst, a host for your tag container, or an importer of another app's settings.
Every tool in this category can grow sideways: another editor, another dashboard, another place to keep your data. Each addition is one more thing that can be wrong without anyone noticing. We would rather say no in public. Then you can tell quickly whether HonestTag fits your store, and when HonestTag shows you a number, you know what that number is about.
Each section below gives the plain definition, why it is out of scope, what HonestTag does instead, and who should pick a different kind of tool. Where a plan matters, the plan is named.
No data-layer or event editor
A data-layer editor lets you define the events your store emits, name them, map them to each ad platform, and manage the tags that send them, often inside Google Tag Manager. It is a tool for building and running your own tracking setup.
HonestTag does not do that job, and it is not a replacement for Google Tag Manager. It builds its own purchase events, so there is no event schema for you to write or keep in sync with each platform.
What you get instead:
- Purchase events built from your orders. HonestTag builds its own purchase events from your Shopify orders, with its own event IDs, and each Setup card says what it sends.
- Classified actions in Google Ads, as secondary. When HonestTag sets up Google Ads, auto-setup creates its classified conversion actions for first-order customers, returning customers, and new customers whose first recorded click was a Google ad. They start as secondary actions, so your campaigns' bidding does not change until you choose.
Pick a different tool if you or your agency want to define every event and own every tag yourselves. A data-layer or tag-management tool is built for that job. Our pages on Elevar and Stape say when each one fits.
No AI analyst or BI suite
An AI analyst or BI suite is a tool for exploring your data with SQL, dashboards and forecasts, often with an AI assistant built in.
HonestTag's answer to "what should I do with this channel?" is a published rule with the numbers printed beside it, not a written summary from a model. A verdict you can check by hand is one you can argue with.
What you get instead:
- Weekly verdicts with the numbers shown. On Truth and up, each channel and campaign gets a weekly Scale, Hold or Cut verdict, computed by published rules with the numbers behind it. When an evidence floor is not met, it says "No verdict" and names the floor that failed.
- Your data, in a file you can load elsewhere. On every plan, the Export everything card on the Orders tab downloads your attribution history as NDJSON, which any spreadsheet importer, script or warehouse loader can read. See the export format.
- Your own AI tool, read-only. On Scale and Scale+, an AI tool that can add a remote MCP server can read the same scorecard and Gap your Analytics page shows. It reads totals only and cannot change anything. See connect an AI tool.
Pick a different tool if you want one product that brings data from across the business into dashboards with an AI assistant built in. An analytics suite is built for that. Our Triple Whale page says when it fits.
No hosting for your tag container
Server-side tagging often means running a server container, such as a server-side Google Tag Manager container, on hosting you set up and pay for. You own the container and every tag in it.
HonestTag is not a place to run your container. It runs its own tracking and sending, so there is no server for you to set up, size or keep running.
What you get instead:
- Nothing to host. HonestTag's tracking runs on HonestTag's own service on Cloudflare's network. Each store gets its own tracking address on HonestTag's domain, and Shopify's order webhooks come to that address.
- An optional address on your own domain. On Starter and up, you can move the pixel's address to a subdomain of your store's domain by adding one CNAME record. The default address keeps working either way.
- No overage fees. Your bill changes only when you approve it.
Pick a different tool if you want to own a server container and every tag in it, or one setup that also covers a site that is not on Shopify. A server-side tag host is built for that. Our Stape page says when it fits.
No settings import from another app
A settings import would read another tracking app's configuration file and copy its setup into HonestTag.
None of the tracking apps merchants most often switch from documents a settings export we could read, so HonestTag does not claim to read one.
What you get instead:
- A preview from the code you already have. The "Switching from another tracking app?" card on the Setup tab reads the tag code or IDs you paste from the old app or your theme. Before anything changes, it shows which HonestTag card each ID belongs to, whether it can be filled in or is shown only, and what cannot be carried over. Nothing you paste is saved.
- Your old app's tokens stay with it. The card never takes a token from what you paste. You connect each platform on its own card with a credential you create for HonestTag.
- A warning about double counting. The preview warns you when the old app and HonestTag would, or could, send purchases to the same ID. Duplicate purchase events explains why that matters.
Pick a different tool if you need your old app's event names, mappings, attribution windows, filters and reports carried over exactly as they are. Keep that app. HonestTag can run beside it while you compare, as the alongside guide shows.
The trade-off in one line
If you want one tool that does everything, HonestTag is not that tool. If you want a first-click new-customer number built from your own orders, with the order behind it on paid plans, that is the job HonestTag does.
The free Mirror sends nothing to any ad platform, so it can run beside a data-layer tool, an analytics suite or a server container while you decide. To see how HonestTag sits next to named tools, start at Compare.
Frequently asked questions
Does HonestTag have a data-layer or event editor?
No. HonestTag builds its own purchase events from your Shopify orders, and each Setup card says what it sends. If you want to define your own events and tags, a tag-management tool is built for that.
Can I ask an AI about my HonestTag numbers?
On Scale and Scale+, yes. An AI tool that can add a remote MCP server can read your scorecard and Gap, read-only and totals only. HonestTag does not build its own AI analyst.
Do I need to host anything to use HonestTag?
No. HonestTag runs its own tracking and sending. On Starter and up you can optionally put the pixel's address on a subdomain of your store's domain with one CNAME record.
Can HonestTag import my settings from another tracking app?
Not as a file. None of the tracking apps merchants most often switch from documents a settings export. Paste the old app's tag code or IDs into the switching card on the Setup tab, and it shows which HonestTag card each ID belongs to and whether it can be filled in.
