Switching from another tracking app
By the HonestTag team ยท Published September 27, 2026
If another app sends your store's purchases to your ad platforms today, HonestTag can read the IDs it uses and show you, before anything changes, what it can fill in on each Setup card and what it cannot. Nothing is saved from what you paste and nothing is sent to an ad platform. You still connect each platform on its own card with a token or sign-in you create for HonestTag.
Why there is no import file
None of the tracking apps merchants most often switch from documents a settings export we could read. Some show your pixel and tag IDs on their settings screens, and all of them put the ad platforms' own tag code on your storefront. So HonestTag reads that: the website tag code Meta, Google Ads, Google Analytics 4, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, Reddit and Microsoft Advertising (UET) publish, Google IDs that start with AW- or G-, or one ID per line after the platform name, like Meta pixel ID: 1234567890.
How it works
- Open the Setup tab in the app and find Switching from another tracking app? below the connection cards.
- Copy the pixel or tag IDs from your old app's settings, or the tag code it shows, and paste them in. Your theme code or each platform's own events manager shows the same IDs.
- Select Preview what carries over. Each ID gets a row that says what happens to it.
- Select Fill in on a row to put that ID into its card's form, then finish connecting on that card.
What each ID becomes
- TikTok pixel code, Snap Pixel ID, Reddit Pixel ID, GA4 measurement ID. Filled into that card's form. You add a token or API secret you create for HonestTag, and the card checks it before it saves.
- Google Ads conversion ID and label. Shown only. HonestTag signs in to Google Ads and uses its own HonestTag_Purchase action, or one you pick from your account after sign-in, so the ID helps you pick the matching action.
- Meta pixel. Shown only. You pick the pixel on the Meta card when you connect.
- Pinterest tag ID. Shown only. HonestTag sends Pinterest events through your ad account, so the Pinterest card asks for the ad account ID instead.
- Microsoft Advertising UET tag ID. Shown only. HonestTag uploads offline conversions to a conversion goal in your Microsoft Advertising account, not to a UET tag, so the Microsoft card asks for the account and customer IDs instead.
An ID is never filled in when the card already holds a different one, when your paste has two IDs for the same card, when the card would not accept it, or when that card is not open on your store. The row says which.
What is never carried over
- Access tokens, API keys and secrets. Credentials belong to the app they were made for. If your paste has any, the preview says how many were set aside, and they are not read or stored. You create a new one for HonestTag on each card.
- Event names and mappings. HonestTag sends its own purchase events from your Shopify orders, with its own event IDs. Each card says exactly what it sends.
- Attribution windows, filters and reports. HonestTag reads your orders and ad spend itself.
Two purchase sources for one pixel
While the old app is still installed, it keeps sending its own purchase events, with its own event IDs, which HonestTag's never match. If HonestTag sends to the same pixel, each order can reach the platform twice and be counted twice. The preview warns you when:
- HonestTag already sends purchases to an ID you pasted, and the pasted code sends purchases there too;
- HonestTag already sends purchases to an ID you pasted, and the old app might too;
- the pasted code sends purchases to an ID you are about to connect here.
Remove the old app, or turn off its purchase event for that platform, before or right after you connect it here. An app that also sends purchases from its own server does not show that in any tag code, so check its settings too. Shopify gives apps no way to see which other apps a store has installed, so HonestTag cannot check that for you.
